Voyage of Vaillant 1836-1837
August Nicolas Vaillant’s mission followed the commercial goals of Laplace. Arrangements had been made in advance for him to meet with consuls of many ports in the interest of facilitating trade relations. He visited South America, Hawaii, China (especially Macao and Canton), the Philippines, and Calcutta. Vaillant devotes several paragraphs in his voyage account to American trade in Canton, noting that the exports included tea, drugs, and objects of fantasy said to be "chinoiserie."
