Voyages:
Scientific Circumnavigations 1679 to 1859

Louis-Antoine comte de Bougainville's Voyage 1766-1769

Bougainville’s specific mission was to sail to the Malouines (Falkland Islands, off the east coast of South America), which had been claimed by the Spanish, and deliver payment for rights to establish French colonies there. His broader goal was a voyage "made with the spirit of discovery". He complained that half of the known circumnavigators:

"who had no other view than to enrich themselves by their attacks upon the Spaniards, followed known tracks, without increasing the knowledge of geography."

Map of the World and Bougainville's Route

from Voyage Autour du Monde
Paris: Chez Saillant & Nyon, 1772.

Like Dampier's map of Australia, Bougainville's map shows only the west coast of that continent. The east coast awaited Captain Cook's survey.
