The Novara Expedition 1857-1859
 
In 1856, the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maxillian was considering a scientific mission for Austria and he called upon the elderly German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt for advice. Humboldt supported plans for the Novara Expedition to sail around the world.

The Novara sailed east around Africa to India and Indonesia; from China to Australia and New Zealand; then east across the Pacific Ocean to South America and around its tip back to the Atlantic.
