Eudyptes chrysocome (St. Paul Island)

from Reise der Österreichischen Fregatte Novara

Unter den Befehlen des
Commodore B. von Wüllerstorf-Urbair

Vienna: Gerold, 1861-75
.

The zoologists serving on the expedition, Georg Frauenfeld and Johann Zelebar, amassed an impressive collection of natural history objects during the voyage, including more than a thousand bird specimens.

These penguins were observed on St. Paul Island, which lies in the middle of the south Indian Ocean between the southern tip of Africa and the southwest coast of Australia. Another island, named Amsterdam, lies nearby to the north; together they create an isolated sanctuary in the sea.
