Voyages: Scientific Circumnavigations 1679 to 1859
  The Voyage of Laplace 1830-1832
 
The ship encountered ferocious hurricanes after rounding the tip of Africa. It finally was able to sail north to Réunion Island, which lies southeast of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, and then northeast toward Indonesia. Laplace was instructed to more thoroughly explore the Indian Ocean and the route from there through the Strait of Malacca, between Sumatra and Malaysia, into the China Sea. .
